Later on in the afternoon, both Kinsey and Terry called to see how they were, after they'd left in such a hurry, that morning. Ghost answered the phone, when Kinsey called.

"Hey, Kinsey, this is Ghost."

"Hey, Ghost, I see you got back home. How's your throat? How's Steve?" Kinsey asked.

"We're ok, 'cause of Spirit. He lifted us up, and now we're good."

"You what?" Kinsey asked.

Ghost repeated what he'd just said, only louder. "Did you hear it that time?" he yelled into the phone.

"Ghost, I can hear you fine. I just don't know what you're talking about. Let me talk to Steve, ok?"

"Ok, but if you come over, can you bring cat food?"

"Uh...sure, Ghost," Kinsey was confused.

"Hey, Kinsey," Steve said, as he got on the phone.

"How's it going out there...everything ok?" Kinsey asked.

"Yeah, I'm getting around pretty good. Ghost's throat is a little better, and we have Spirit to cheer us up," Steve said.

"Ok, Steve...what are you and Ghost talking about? Is he talking to spirits again - in the house?"

"Yeah, Spirit's in the house," Steve said.

Kinsey took a second to reply, "Are you sure y'all are ok? Both of you going on about talking to spirits...and, why do you need cat food?"

"Oh, that," Steve laughed. "We got a cat, and we need cat food. We named him Spirit."

"You what?"

Steve repeated what he'd just said, only louder.

"Ok, don't holler. I get it...I think," Kinsey said.

"Yeah, so are you coming out here?" Steve asked. "If ya do, bring some cat food. If not, Ghost'll have to walk into town."

"Well, I guess I can in a little while...say, in about an hour?" Kinsey said.

"Yeah, that's great, Kinsey, see ya then," Steve said, then ended the call.

"Kinsey's coming and bringing Spirit some food," he told Ghost.

"Ok, good...I'm hungry, too...are you?" Ghost asked.

"Sure, what do we have?"

"I'm gonna make pancakes, 'cause we haven't had them in a long time," Ghost said. He went into the kitchen to get things started. "Maybe Kinsey will want some, too...he never had the ones I make."

"That sounds real good," Steve said. He picked up his guitar, and began working on their songs, again.

Soon, the house was smelling of pancakes and coffee.

"Hey, Ghost...Kinsey just drove up...set him a plate."

"C'mon in, Kinsey," Steve hollered, at Kinsey's knock.

"Hey, guys, it smells good in here," Kinsey said, sniffing the aroma.

"Yeah, Ghost is making pancakes, and he already set you a plate," Steve said.

Ghost came into the living room holding Spirit. He held out the kitten to Kinsey. "This is Spirit, our cat."

"That's a cute kitty," Kinsey said, as he took the cat into his arms.

"Did ya bring him some food?"

"Yeah, it's in the bag over there."

Ghost got it and went back to the kitchen.

"Ghost sounds in a better mood, than earlier," Kinsey said. "This little guy do the trick?"

"Yeah, he came back with him...said he found him at his grandmother's grave, and that she sent him." Steve shrugged. "Who's to say...he just showed up there, ya know."

"Yeah," Kinsey said. "Anyway, if Ghost is happier, then I'm glad he came along."

Ghost came out of the kitchen, and asked, "Y'all want to eat in there, or at the table?"

"We'll come in there," Steve said, pushing himself up off the couch.

The cat was playing around at their feet, trying to catch them. Ghost put a huge plate of pancakes on the table, already buttered, and eggs, bacon, and coffee. The jar of molasses was there, along with honey and maple syrup. They all filled their plates.

"Ghost, these are the best I've ever had. I mean it. Steve was always going on about your cooking, now I'm a believer."

"Thanks, Kinsey. I like to cook, and my grandmother showed me how to make lots of stuff."

"So what's next, guys? Working on anything lately?" Kinsey asked.

"Just the book, and a new CD of our songs. They're just about finished. We need to get the book printed, and make it into an actual book, and then we go into the studio to record the songs. We'll do that over at Terry's place. That's all for now," Steve said.

Kinsey nodded, "Well, I have that show coming up for Halloween. Y'all are coming, right?"

"We'll try to," Steve said. "I need to see if I can drive, now. With this cast on, it might be weird." He looked over at Ghost. "But, I guess you could drive us out there...couldn't you, Ghost?"

"What, drive?" Ghost asked. "You said I couldn't ever, ever, ever drive your car again...so, guess I won't be driving us anywhere."

"Oh, yeah...well, maybe if I can't , you could, just this one time?"

"Uh-uh, no way," Ghost said, shaking his head.

Kinsey and Steve looked at each other, "Well, guess that's that, then," Kinsey said. "You'll have to start practicing how to drive, Steve."

"You can start tomorrow," Ghost said. He got up to clear the table. "Hey, Spirit, ya want some cat food?" He opened a can, and scooped some out onto a saucer. They all watched, as the cat ate it all. "Looks like he likes it, Kinsey."

"Sure looks like it," Kinsey said. "Well guess I need to get back. Thanks for supper, Ghost," he said, as he got his coat, and went to the front door. "If you want to, drive on over, tomorrow, Steve.

Ghost finished cleaning the kitchen, while Steve played his guitar, awhile. Then joining him on the couch, they sang their songs, until Ghost's voice grew hoarse, again. He curled up next to Steve, just listening to Steve play, and Spirit nestled into the crook of Ghost's arm, going to sleep. Ghost was trying to keep his eyes open, but kept nodding off. Steve's playing got slower and softer, until he just finally stopped. The house was warm and comfortable, and everyone was relaxed.

He smiled, as he looked at Ghost. This is my family...I love my family... He put his guitar down, and reached over and stroked Spirit. "So soft..." he whispered. Then he stroked Ghost's pale hair, the strands mingling with the cat's fur. "So soft..."

Ghost opened his eyes and smiled his crooked smile..."I want you, Steve...I want you real bad."

Steve ran his hand over Ghost's cheek, his thumb brushing against his soft lips. Ghost closed his eyes, taking a shuddery breath, his tongue touching Steve's thumb.

"Ghost?" Steve whispered.

Ghost drew in his breath, as he rose from the couch, holding out his hand to help Steve up. As Steve regained his balance on his leg, he took Ghost's face in his hands, gazing into those eyes, so full of need for him. He felt Ghost's hot breath on his face, drawing him into a long kiss.

They made their way down the hallway, to Ghost's bedroom. "Can you...will it hurt your leg?" Ghost asked.

"It'll be ok, Ghost...we'll manage it..." Steve said, not caring if it hurt his leg, or not.

Ghost pulled down the soft blankets on the bed, then turned and smiled...he was ready. Steve came closer, running his hands up under Ghost's shirt, slowly taking it up and over Ghost's head. Ghost gasped...he was still so hot from his fever, and shivery from Steve's touch, and the cool air against his body. They lay together on the bed, each lost in their love for each other, until both found the release they craved. They fell asleep, under the glowing stars on the ceiling, in each other's arms.
